1. Sköna citat från Eric
Under en kurs år 2008 i Uppsala sa Eric bl. a. följande:
- "The level of the code is the level of the second worst programmer in the team. I used to think that the worst programmer set the level of the code, but the other developers always keep that guy under close watch and will clean up after him."
Den näst sämste är det ingen som hinner bry sig om eftersom:
- "One hacker could easily keep five good programmers busy cleaning."
Men cheferna gillar ändå hackaren, varför?
- "These hackers, why are they heros in the organization? Because they work on the core domain!"
Det viktigaste för organisationen är att funktionaliteten i "core domain" utvecklas, stödfunktionalitet är inte lika viktigt. Eric vill att de utvecklare som i vanliga fall mest städar ska gå över till "core domain", den domän där förändringar har störst värde för organisationen.
- "It doesnt all have to be good."
Med detta menar Eric att det inte är någon idé att städa upp i gamla stödsystem om organisationens fokus, och därmed "core domain", ligger någon annan stans. Eric fick en fråga om vad man ska göra när man lämnar över en applikation till maintenance och det förfall detta i vanliga fall innebär:
- "If you want to keep the flexibility (of the code) then dont hand it over. But if the core domain moves, then it is OK to hand it over to maintenance and thereby let it become a more or less static legacy system".
Vad gör då den domändrivne utvecklaren som skiljer sig från hackarens mer direkta problemlösningsmetodik:
- "When things go tuff, dont plow through it. Go back to the model!"
Komplicerade problem och specialfall antyder att domänmodellen måste ändras eller utökas för att möta de nya kraven. Evans har också åsikter om hur stort scope man ska ta när man löser problem:
- "We do not want to do it feature by feature, we want to lay out a new domain model to enable new features."
